In Johannesburg I worked with one of the most talented editors I have ever met, super interesting guy who’d spent his school years in Belgium and gravitated around Europe for a few years after that before becoming editor of a large computer magazine in Dubai for 6 years. Ridiculously talented guy with a string of achievement orientated awards behind him to prove his worth to the world yet personally, he was desperately unfulfilled. After a few beers a month or two before his 40th birthday it emerged that what was lacking was that “signature achievement”, that one thing that every body in the world gets is you, it’s your thing, it’s what defines you, it’s what draws that line in the sand for you and challenges the world to man up and stake their claim too.
