What motivated you to start a crèche in your community? My background is in Early Years and Art teaching. When I was approached for assistance in setting up a playschool here, I thought it would be a good experience to share with the community. I know that children who have an informal educational experience in a playschool cope with formal schooling far better than those who don’t, and I want these kids to feel the benefit of that.
What challenges do you face?
I think the biggest challenge is one of communication. If only in this wondrous technological age there were a way to access all languages instantaneously. We’re forging a zigzag path through varied cultural and psychological landscapes to a place where we share the same vision, and we’ve all taken responsibility to realise that vision. We have to maintain focus and a good sense of humour. And money honey! It’s the medium through which all mobilisation takes place.
Do you have any plans in the pipeline?
We’re really situated in the middle of nowhere, so the plan is to teach computer literacy to over two hundred kids. We also want to start an arts and crafts centre, to teach multiple craft ideas and skills. Riebeeck East is your typical sleepy hollow, and we’re at the stage where the prince has found the sleeping princess and must now decide whether or not to break the magic spell. The aim will be to form more partnerships with outside organisations, and get the commitment of interested parties to invest their time and attention in this beautiful, little town.

What do you take from what you do?
Relationships with the kids, their families, and other people we encounter day to day. And realising that only the tiniest bit of hope is needed to make the path we’re walking feel worthwhile.
Why does what you do matter?
Our country makes a magnificent patchwork quilt, but we need to get the pieces together. I can assist in building an integrated and interdependent community - why not?

A permaculture garden project at the local school planted the seed for a community pre-school, and two years ago, Yolande Delport opened up Ibhabhathane Community Centre to serve the Riebeeck East Community. Here, children between the ages of two and five come to learn and play and get the benefit of early socialisation. We spoke to the big-hearted woman behind it all.
