Two years ago Marc Pradavand and Yolande Delport packed there bags and left their home in Cape Town to begin their dream life in the small town of Riebeek East. They were early, the plan was to stay in Cape Town for another year, save there pennies and then set out. Marc and Yolande felt that if they waited the time would never be right for the life they truly wanted.
Having spent the past 7 years living in Johannesburg and only recently returning to my home town, I was aware of the drought but the reality of the situation only hit home when I actually started living here again. Multiple “awareness” billboards, super creative water saving lifestyles amongst my friends, and the sight of hundreds of home rainwater reservoirs really drove home that this is serious, that people get that and are actively taking steps to do their bit in conserving water, and that life in the 21st Century is as fragile as it ever was in the history of our planet.
